Madison Homes and Their Heating
We work throughout the 37115 area: along Gallatin Pike, off Neely's Bend Road and Old Hickory Boulevard, around Amqui Station and toward Rivergate. Much of Madison was built in the 1950s through the 1970s, so we see a lot of brick ranches with ductwork in the crawl space, a gas furnace in a hall closet or the crawl space, and equipment that's been replaced one piece at a time. Gas lines and venting in these houses are often decades old too. We also work on rentals and the newer homes scattered through the area.
Common Furnace Problems in Older Homes
The furnace runs but blows cool air, often from a dirty flame sensor or failed igniter
It shuts off on its own because a clogged filter or small return lets it overheat
Crawl space ducts that have pulled apart or lost their insulation
Rooms at the far end of the house that never warm up
Worn blower motors and old thermostats
Heat pumps that rely on backup heat more than they should
What a Visit Looks Like
Call or text and tell us what the furnace is doing. We'll test it, find the cause and give you the price before any work starts. When we work on a gas furnace in an older home, we also look at the venting and the gas connection. Before we leave, we run the furnace through a full cycle and make sure it's heating and venting safely.
Repair or Replace?
Most furnaces last 15 to 20 years. If yours is older than that, has a cracked heat exchanger, or keeps needing repairs, it's time to compare options. In an older house, a replacement is also a good time to look at the ducts, the venting and the attic insulation, because those affect comfort as much as the furnace does. We'll go over both choices honestly. See our heat pump and furnace installation page.
Honest Winter Tips
Have a gas furnace checked every fall. In older homes, the heat exchanger and flue are the parts we most want to look at.
Keep working carbon monoxide detectors near bedrooms.
If your floors stay cold, the crawl space ducts or insulation may be the problem, not the furnace.
If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. Once it's safe, we can find and repair the leak.
