Cooling an Older Old Hickory Home

In the old village, a lot of homes have ductwork that was added decades after the house was built. Ducts tend to be small, returns are often too few, and the attic or crawl space they run through is usually hot in summer. Near Old Hickory Lake and the Cumberland River, the air is often muggy, and humidity is half of what an air conditioner has to deal with. A system that's low on refrigerant, oversized, or short on airflow may cool the house without pulling the moisture out, so it feels cold and clammy at the same time. Newer homes in the area have their own issues, usually clogged drains and dirty coils.

Signs Your AC Needs Repair

  • Warm or barely cool air from the vents

  • The outdoor unit hums but the fan doesn't spin

  • Ice on the copper lines or the indoor coil

  • Water around the indoor unit or a stain on the ceiling below it

  • The house never reaches the thermostat setting, or it feels sticky

  • Buzzing, grinding or rattling that wasn't there last year

What a Visit Looks Like

Call or text and tell us what's going on. We check the electrical parts, refrigerant, airflow and drain, find the cause, and give you the price before we start. Common fixes like a capacitor, contactor or clogged drain are usually done in one visit. Before we leave, we make sure the house is actually cooling.

Repair or Replace?

Most air conditioners and heat pumps last around 10 to 15 years. If yours is in that range and needs a compressor or a coil, or still runs on R-22 (an older refrigerant that's no longer made), it's worth comparing a repair against a new system. We'll lay out both and let you decide.

Honest Summer Tips

  • Change the filter every one to three months, more often if you have pets.

  • Keep shrubs and grass clippings at least a couple of feet back from the outdoor unit.

  • If you see ice, switch the system off (you can leave the fan on) and call us. Running it frozen can ruin the compressor.

  • On the hottest July afternoons, even a healthy system can run nonstop and fall a few degrees behind. Keeping the thermostat steady works better than turning it way down.

Old Hickory AC Repair FAQs

Why does my house feel damp with the AC running?

Usually it's low refrigerant, an oversized system or poor airflow. We can find which one it is.

My AC still uses R-22. Do I have to replace it?

Not right away. If it runs fine, keep it. If it develops a leak, recharging gets expensive, and that's when replacing it usually makes more sense.

Do you work on heat pumps?

Yes, in cooling and heating mode, all major brands.

Can I get help after hours?

Yes. Text "EMERGENCY" with your address to 615-601-0591. See emergency HVAC service.
